Identify problems and talk about concerns

SubManagers in districts and organizations know their jobs well enough to know when they need to act. We want to help you focus on your needs so you can understand what to do next.

1. Take time to fill out our focus quiz:

The quiz is only 1 page and only takes a few minutes. But it will help you identify strengths and weaknesses in your current Sub program.

Download the focus quiz here

2. Contact our district coordinator:

Your district coordinator is Kelley Stone, she is available to talk to you M-F from 8 am – 4:30 pm MT or you can schedule an appointment to talk with her in-depth.

Kelley’s email: kelley@stedi.org
Kelley’s phone: 435-755-7800 (704)

Ask the right questions:
Here are some questions that many Sub Managers ask Kelley:

Who pays for Substitute Teacher Training?  What are the options for my district?

STEDI has several training options, which would be best for my situation?

Do you have volume pricing?  What are the prices?

Is there any kind of guarantee for me or my subs?

How can I train Subs I have already hired?

Decide which options will work best for you

1. Subs pay vs. district pay

Some districts will want to provide incentives for their Subs by purchasing codes that allow the Subs to take our training without charge. We offer volume pricing for this option. There are also advantages to having the Subs commit to paying for their own initial training. If you have questions about this email your district coordinator.

2. Online Training vs. Printed Handbook Training vs. both

handbookThe quickest way to get training 24/7 is our SubSkills Online Course, it takes most Subs about 8 hours to complete and the online assessment is included.  For those who learn better with a printed manual or for live trainings, we offer our 9th Edition Substitute Teacher Training Manual.  In this model, Subs study the material and take the online assessment. Either way they get a SubDiploma which they give to you before being hired. We also offer both together as a package which gives them the best of both worlds.

3. Training new Subs or Existing Subs or both

SubSkills is the best course for new Subs.  It provides them with all the tools to be sharp and prepared in the classroom.  For Subs who are already working in your district we offer more targeted training at a great price, advanced courses in Classroom Management, Teaching Strategies or Special Education. You can also train both groups with great package deals.

Best for Training

SubSkillsCourseTrain and screen your substitute teachers prior to employment with the 8-10 hour SubSkills Online or Live Training course. This university-based course provides the skills for classroom management and the techniques to implement a lesson plan left by the permanent teacher, plus a lot, lot more.

By rewarding individuals who step up on their own and take the training by hiring them first or giving them preferred placement on jobs, substitute teachers will be more than willing to invest in training. The substitute teacher wins with better skills to enjoy the day, you win with fewer complaints and a better prepared staff, and most of all, the students win by not losing a valuable day!

Developed at the Substitute Teaching Institute at Utah State University, SubSkills is a must for every non-certified substitute teacher.
