Do your students eat in class? If they just return from breakfast, then having these bellwarmers on the board or with worksheets will let them know that it's time to transition to the business of learning new materials that day. Use graphic organizers because your tactile student learners will probably need to use their hands more, and the breakfast may have them super hyped. Make sure the bellwarmers count towards a grade or participation points!Mon, 23 Jan 2012 18:09:06 GMTMy Courses/Sub-Oreintationhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=459After signing in(creating an account), I watched a video about the next steps to take. The column on the left is equip with the "my Courses" tab. this does not show up on the left, meaning that I can't access "sub-orientation". Can I just go ahead and take the assessments? Thu, 12 Jan 2012 18:04:48 GMTLearn the material, take this seriously, you'll have no problems. http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=457Ladies and gentleman, After discussing the STEDI course training with a lady out in Utah and reading some of the threads in this forum, I felt compelled to post how my journey has gone so far. First off, I'm 32 years old with B.S. in communications from a directional state university in Tennessee. At this stage of my life, I've became a statistic when it hit me that I would love to teach, coach, and help young people succeed. Onto the coursework. I'm not bragging, I'm just telling you that on the first attempt of the classroom management section I made a 100. How? You have to take this seriously. It's more than just reading the book or going through the slides. Now I understand everyone learns and retains material differently, but this has seemingly worked for me. First, don't move on to the next section until you get the necessary scoring for each section, ie focus on each chapter. Next, once you read the section, either go back and take notes on it, don't just highlight or take notes while you read. Once you're through the chapter, go back and re-copy your notes, either handwriting or in my case I typed them out, organizing them by section/subsection. Once you've finished that, print them off. Take an additional 10-15 minutes and review the material before you take an assesment. I promise you this works. I used this method to graduate college after learning it from a professor. She always said quizzes come lectures/notes, tests come from quizzes, exams from tests and it all ties back to the lecture/notes. By doing this you're going over the material four times, it's like a good golf swing, throwing motion or forehand. It takes practice and studying. My brother taught school for 15 years, he said it best when I first started this journey. "Schools aren't going to let just anyone from the street come in and manage a classroom." Good luck everyone and remember the STEDI course people will help you out with any question you might have. Mon, 09 Jan 2012 10:25:07 GMTLack of specific answers to the questions in the assessmentshttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=455Hello,

I'm sorry you're having such a difficult time with the assessments. I was reviewing your scores and they are just fine. You'll find that the Classroom Management and Teaching Strategies sections are the most difficult assessments.

We find that most substitute teachers are anxious to be trained and learn skills that are necessary for the teaching profession. All of the skills provided in the training are there to help you succeed as a substitute teacher.

One final note, if you have a question on the assessment about what the school district policy is, it is recommended throughout the training to review the district policies.

I hope this is helpful for you. If you have further questions, feel free to email me, Jessica@STEDI.org

Lack of specific answers to the questions in the assessmentshttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=455I am having a terrible time attempting to complete this nightmarish 'learning experience.' I am a newly-credentialed teacher and was not educated with the use of all these 'strategies' and I also have a hard time doing any kind of online learning. My university professors were able to grade my online tests because they understood what I was trying to say, which the computer system does not. I am not going to do my Teaching Strategies final assessment attempt yet because there are several items to which I have not been able to find the 'correct' answers. For example, how to ensure that you are following school district policy before showing a particular video. Some questions need definite answers and I feel that this whole website is doing a disservice to the profession. I am intelligent, well educated, sensitive, etc., but my results in these 'assessments' would make me totally give up if I did not have a healthy sense of self-worth.Sat, 31 Dec 2011 16:57:03 GMTWhich course is needed for substitute teacher?http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=454There are four substitute teacher training options: Basic Option A Basic Option B Premium and Ultimate which one of the is required to complete the requirement for substitute teacher? Boston Public Schools requires the $39.95 training package. Training option A is found completely online. You have immediate access once you purchase.

Training option B is for those who don't have access to a computer on a regular basis. We send you a Handbook, you print the study guide off, and then take the assessment online.

I hope this is a helpful summary. If you have any further questions, feel free to call our offices at 1-800-922-4693.

In situations such as these you'll need to first determine of the behavior is consequential or inconsequential. With silly comments from students like the ones you mentioned, they could be considered attention seeking behaviors therefore you should ignore them and get started on the lesson. Even though you are ignoring the behavior, be sure to continually watch for appropriate behavior and to praise it.

94% of inappropriate behavior found in the classroom is inconsequential. If the student is damaging the learning environment then you should put the behavior on extinction through strategies such as talking to the student privately.

I hope this helps.

I got 6 incorrect by the test standards. However my answers were based upon high school students. One question about leaving lights on during a video. I stated sometimes the answer was frequently. I can see leaving lights on with a freshman class of LA Math students but why would you leave the lights on for an AP Calc or AP Biology. One class needs more over sight than others. There are several others like that as well. I find many of the tests or questions here need to be better directed to the level you are subbing for. Grades K thru 5 are different than 6 thru 8 and 9 thru 12. Personally I find the middle school student the toughest to work with. Kind of like hearding cats. High school students are great to work with. Wed, 27 Jul 2011 14:47:02 GMTSub Payhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=407A national pay for subs would not work at all. The biggest obstacle is the cost of living in different areas. On what area of the country do you base the national pay grade Just think a national pay grade of $100 per day. Maybe too low in Los Angeles, Dallas, or NY. Meaning those areas will not be getting qualified subs. Where as that same $100 in rural areas of the country maybe too high for the tax rate to support. Then every one there not a teacher is looking to sub. Each part of the country needs to set it's own rates based upon it's economy. Where I am in Fl we have three rates. HS grads, 60 hours of college and college graduates. Top rate CG is $89. They are also expected to do more than just "baby sit or show movies". Many end up doing long term subbing and get paid at the regular rate upon 20 days in a row at the same classroom. If you do 20+ in a row but are in many different classes you stay at $89.00 per day. National pay rate for subs will not work just like a national pay rate for regular teachers would not work.Wed, 27 Jul 2011 14:26:31 GMTFill In Activities Sectionhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=404I have taken the fill-in activities and having trouble with getting higher than 90. So, I stopped and started focusing on the other tests...starting with the shortest (possibly easiest). I took my time and have completed two more tests (which I received 100% on both). I will be testing on "Teaching Strategies" tomorrow and I'm hoping to pull off another 100%, but the chapter is SOOOOO long, it's hard to retain so much information at once. What has seemed to help me (at least with the last two tests) is taking the test IMMEDIATELY after you have studied the information and it's fresh in your brain. Also, have your notes next to you for quick/easy access (if necessary). I have glanced at the Special Education chapter and I am DREADING taking that assessment because it is SUPER long! Well, I guess I need to stay positive. It will be all over soon. Dreading and complaining won't make it any better. I should just SUCK IT UP and 'do what I gotta do!' Good luck to everyone one. We often find that the people who have the most difficult time with the test are the really analytical thinkers because they read too much into the questions. I know it's a difficult test, but don't read too much into the questions.

I don't understand why any one would get into a profession that would require you to be decent, especially in this technological world, and turn around and show a side of you that parents and the world will see and hear about sooner or later. Why would you want someone to see you with guns or half-naked just because you feel it's your right? No one endears their privacy any more and this is sad. The whole world is watching almost everything you do and the only thing you can think to do is pose with guns and represent a school who has a "no tolerance" policy about guns. I personally would not want to friend anyone that I do not already know or have known for some years. When you start friending children, I have to wonder what a grown person's motivation is for doing that. I like being an adult and like being and interacting with my peers, children must be made to stay in their place as children. They have plenty of time to be grown. We receive bonuses for working a whole 2 week pay period and also bonuses for working at what is deemed as high priority schools. You can imagine what that means so the pay is not bad if you can do all of the above and get your regular pay rate as well of $10+ dollars. I think the more important issue is receiving benefits after so much time serving for a school district. It is sad to hear stories of people working 7 to 10 years as a substitute full-time and not receiving benefits. It's a little disheartening to say the least... ThanksThu, 14 Apr 2011 10:18:40 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346If you wish the students to be on task, you need a sound knowledge base and confidence. You should be sincere in your efforts to make the day a productive one for the kids as well as for yourself. Go through the lesson plan carefully and make your expectations clear to the students that each student would be accountable, that work needs to be done. Do not shout, but be firm so that they do not walk over you. I always go around the classroom checking on their work, offering a comment, helping them as they need at the same time making a list of good students who are on task. Most students want to be in the good books of their teachers. Ignore those who seriously want to be disruptive at first, but when you check their work offer your sincere advice and tell them you really want to include them in the good students' list. Most of the time this creates a kind of bonding between you and the class. Do not act like a foreigner, act like a teacher and make your sincere effort. Most of the time you would be surprized to see them waving to you even in the corridors offering recognition for being a sincere teacher. I disagree that they are wild animals, they are our children and we need to know how we should guide them towards the right directionWed, 23 Feb 2011 17:29:06 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Here is what I would advice the sub. First thing is that when I wake up on the morning of a sub job, I get in a good mood, and look forward to the sub job and decide it is going to be a good day. Otherwise if I think negatively, it will be a bad day. If you decide it will be a good day then it will be. I greet each student at the door with a smile on my face and say hello. When the bell has rung I ask them to be quiet so I can take attendance and hear who is present. I also apologize in advance if I mispronounce any names. I then tell them my name and let them know what their teacher has left for them. I let them know I leave notes for the teacher both good and bad. I tell them I have hardly ever had to leave a bad note, I usually leave a good note, but I won't lie and say they were good if they were not. Another poster had a good point, if you are not comfortable with high school, then don't take high school jobs. As far as dress. Even if a school says you can wear jeans and tennis shoes, I don't. Remember the students don't know you and the way you dress sends a message. Jeans and tennis shoes say your a push over. I am not saying wear a dress or a suit, but pants and a shirt or sweater and sandals or shoes. Walk around the room, don't stay seated at the desk. Help the students with their work, they appreciate that. Have a sense of humor, take the job seriously but don't take yourself so seriously, in other words, we all make mistakes, laugh at yourself. Have fun while subbing, you can have fun and teach at the same time and gain the respect of the students. Also respect the students and expect them to respect you, it's a two way street. Keep the kids busy, bring a problem solving book. Mensa has wonderful problem solving activities. Busy kids don't have time to get into trouble or cause classroom management problems. I hope all this helps......Janet Wed, 09 Feb 2011 09:58:17 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I too have had my problems with classroom management but have found several strategies that have worked well for me. BTW, I only sub for elementary school. Right away I work on learning everyone's names and usually know them all within the first hour. I also tell them right away what my rules are. I have four: do not talk when I'm talking; if you want to talk, please raise your hand; if I ask someone a question, don't answer for them; and if I ask a question of the class, raise your hand to answer. If you all call out at once, it sounds like a foreign language to me! I also tell them first thing that I have traveled all over the world and that I have some fun stories that I will share if we have any free moments. I have also learned that praising on task behavior and naming students who are on task, will cause most of the rest of the class to come to attention and follow suit. Then I name a few more names as the others get on task. I have begun telling classes that I like to catch students being good. I also use small rewards either during class or at the end of the day to reward good behavior. These have helped me really get a handle on classroom behavior over the past several years. I love my job as a substitute teacher and love working with the kids. For me, it is the perfect job!Wed, 09 Feb 2011 08:56:02 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Not a quick solution, but one that may help if you don't like confrontation, is to read the book Teaching with Love and Logic, and adopting the ideas to your practice. It is like using jujitsu, not karate. Also, If several students are testing you by being disruptive, chose one, give a warning, and then apply a consequence. If others continue, work on one at a time. And, if you are teaching middle school, consider changing to elementary - it might suit your personality and temperament better. Good Luck! Tue, 08 Feb 2011 20:00:34 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Do not try to keep pace with the students that are willfully disrupting class. Any attempt to match wits with them will be read by the other students as surrendering your authority as the instructor. As others here have said, confidently set your own tone in the room. Do your best to not let nuisances derail your lesson. Be persistent. A teacher, after setting standards for behavior, may eventually feel confident in the students' ability to complete tasks independently and keep each other in line. This is a luxury that most substitutes do not have, as they may have as little as one class period with a set of students. Therefore, you must quickly portray yourself as the authority in the room, and not release those reigns. Be visibly in charge by going around the room to closely monitor behavior. Ask specific questions about the lesson to make sure the students understand it. I substitute mainly for middle and high school, so I answer very few questions about my life because they cut into the short time I have to teach the lesson. But if time allows, I like to give students background information about the lesson, and advice for applying to college. Tue, 08 Feb 2011 05:10:02 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I can't talk. I only go to certain schools where I know I'll be treated respectfully. I'm 'old school', and I'm not down 4 the mess that subs and regular teachers r having to face. One thing I'd like to point out as a theme througout all of the above excellent comments-'To thine own self, be true.' The students can read u like a book. So at the schools I do go to, I let them know up front (thru expression and words and body language) that they will not disrespect me and they will do the work. U will get better as u go. Peace. Mon, 07 Feb 2011 19:22:43 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Following is one tool you can utilize to help you with your classroom management as a Sub. I guarantee it will work. As you're standing in the hall, greeting students as they enter your classroom, look for the "scout". The scout will almost always be a male student; he will have a clearly identifiable ornery glint in his eyes, a lively countenance as for a facial expression, and a spring in his step. As the class scout, he has assumed the role for the class of seeing how far he can push the Sub, i.e. scout out the discipline boundaries the class can get away with. He relishes this role b/c it affords him what he covets most – attention, and all the more so if there is a gaggle of cute girls in the class. :) Now, instead of allowing him to perform his role as a scout/trouble-maker, you’re going to employ the following technique that will get him what he craves, attention, and will get you what you want - an orderly classroom for academic achievement. First, as soon as you spot him, quietly pull him aside and introduce yourself to him. Now, when you pull him aside, he will automatically assume he's in some sort of trouble. Why? Because he's almost always pushing the envelope, and paranoid about being in trouble. :) Thus, you have him in a vulnerable position, and he will listen intently to what you have to say. Moreover, he’ll be overjoyed when he hears what you have to say because he’ll discover that he’s not in trouble, and he gets what he desires. After you introduce yourself to him, ask him his name. This allows you to remove one of a Sub's biggest impediments - not knowing the names of the students. Secondly, having his name makes him realize that he is accountable for his behavior - "yikes! the Sub knows my name". Next, and this is critically important, you elicit his assistance with running the class! I usually say something like, "You look like the kind of guy that would be a first rate assistant. Would you please be my first lieutenant, and help me out today"? They will always give you an enthusiastic, "yes"! Now, instead of drawing attention to himself via negative behavior by being the class scout, he will have attention drawn to him by assisting you with taking attendance, handing out papers, running info to the office, etc. Keep heaping praise on him throughout the class for his fine conduct. The rest of the class usually giggles at this, because he never gets praise for his behavior, thus, if the environment is right; exaggerate your praise toward him. He laughs and the class laughs, and you’ve got endorphins going in their little brains, and learning can commence. But most importantly, you’ve got an ally on your side, instead of the “leader of the pack” working against you! Good Luck, Joe Geist Sun, 06 Feb 2011 12:09:29 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Good evening Arolynpolack! I can feel your frustration and I hope that I can help. I'm not sure what age of students you are working. But let me tell you my credentials before I answer your question. I've subbed in both middle and high school for 3 years now. This year I was selected by my high school to become our school's facilitator for the virtual school which my county started this year. No matter which age level or which class that I've subbed in (and I've worked in most of the classes on campus)I ran into the same problem which you currently have. I'm also currently working on my masters in education so hopefully this will help you out some. This year I was also selected by our school's dean, who is in charge of subs, to maintain and set up a classroom for a math teacher from the 1st day of school and to help be the discipline teacher for a 1st year teacher who really had no classroom management installed in her class and unfortunately the class was walking all over her. Now to answer your question. From day one I've followed these simple steps: 1) Introduce myself to the students including a little of my background. My background comes from law enforcement and the US Army. So I'm a stickler for enforcing the rules of the school board and our school. 2) Informed the students that I would not tolerate any violation of the rules set forth in their student handbooks and if they don't know them to read the book. 3) When there was trouble, I've simply wrote a referral. I've already warned my students that there would be no toleration of them breaking the rules. 4) I also have informed them that it was expected of them to follow the teacher's assignment. 5) I greet them at the door. 6) Since I'm a permanent sub I've also established an open door policy- I'm always in my classroom at lunch time- and that's the best time to reach me. This year, I keep to the steps above, but I have past students seek me out to simply talk, or to seek out help on assignments. It's because of my students that I'm going for my MS in Education. They asked me to become a certified teacher- and by this time this year I will hopefully be one. I'll extend this invitation- if you can find me on here or on Facebook. Feel free to contact me anytime you need help. Sincerly Mary N Triplett From the first day Sat, 05 Feb 2011 17:49:07 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I do several things to help me with classroom management. First, is that I greet students at the door, this helps prevent bad behavior. The same way that retailers want to greet every customer, this help prevent shoplifting. Second is that after the bell rings I study the students and take note of the rowdy students. Next I introduce myself and go over what is appropriate behavior; I go over two or three rules that define appropriate behavior. These are rule that basically follow the concept of being polite to each other. Next I go into lesson plans, lesson plans keep them busy and they have no time to act up. While they are doing the assignment I go to each student and get their names for attendants, writing down the names of student that I noted earlier could be rowdy, calling them by their names when they are acting up helps to keep them behaving appropriately. If I still have students that are rowdy or show disrespect towards me. I take out my Good Behavior sign in sheet that I made using word and have the good students sign in. This is a list of student that followed my definition of what is appropriate behavior. This has worked for me, Students; especially the rowdy ones, beg me to put them on that list, feels good to finally have some power over the students. I also have a Student With Issues sheet.Sat, 05 Feb 2011 17:17:33 GMTclassroom managementhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=378I believe it important to greet students at the door and immediately give them a warm up activity. If this means preparing one in advance and having it ready in your subpack, then it is a good idea to do this. While the students are doing the warm up activity, roll can be taken from the seating chart. If there is no seating chart pass around post it notes for each student to sign and place them on a file folder or clipboard. It is best to take a silent attendance. Circulate around the room while the students are working on the warm up or assigned work. It is important to do the classroom teachers assignments. Positive reinforcement should be used. A post it note, with a positive remark, could be handed to each student who is on task. The substitue teacher should ignore inconsequential or minor disruptions. but address behavior that prevents learning in the classroom. It is important not to take your self too seriously, and to enjoy the classroom experience.Sat, 05 Feb 2011 07:21:29 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I hear you loud and clear! Trying to know why student act the way they do will always be a mystery. So with that said it is our position to try to relate to the behavior in a positive way because they already expecting the negative reply to come forth. In my time with youth that are displaying inappropriate behavior, I try not to feed into drama, yet I give them a positive response after I listen to what they are saying. Because believe it or not they really do have alot to say (usally in anger) but it is a reason for their behavior. Give them a chance to vent and come in with compassion and understanding, not pointing out there wrong but encouraging them. It usally wins them over and the behavior stops. Always tell them that they are smart, brave, intelligent...etc. Everyone loves to be praised. Fri, 04 Feb 2011 16:23:02 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I think you should get the students who cause unwated behaviors to help you out; such as explaining what they read or having other students ask them to explain what to do when they are done their classwork. This will help them to pay attention;you get to teach a lesson and they will not cause any problems.Fri, 04 Feb 2011 14:15:21 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346These are GREAT suggestions! Thank you to those who both posted to the forum as well as emailed me. We greatly appreciate your help!Fri, 04 Feb 2011 12:22:40 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I must say I have no experience in a classroom as a sub, but as the aunt of elementary and middle school aged kids, it does help to find something to communicate with them about on their level. I do agree, we are there to teach and to make sure that the lessons are followed according the schedule and to the plan. Yet, if there is no connection, no way to get the kids' attention, respect or even their admiration, it's kind of down hill from there. I like the post about the discipline charts, and I admire that you are already trying to greet them and get to know you when they come in the door, as we are all to do. But I also like the post about intorducing yourself to the entire classroom to maintain some focus on you as person in charge. Remind them that you respect them and that you simply ask to also recieve their respect. What is my idea when I start as a sub? Well personally I want to surprise them with their lesson plans like if they're an english class, maybe have a song at the beggining of class that you think has to do with the unit they've been studying.(Romeo and Juliet can go with Wow from Aly ad A or Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart can go with Airplanes by BOB with Hayley Williams, for example) Try to reach them in their own world outside of school so that they know that it is important what they learn and that it does affect them after they leave the classroom. I also think that you can implement the lesson over all and make sure if you see someone struggling you go quietly over and see if they need help, some kids are just too proud to ask or too shy.Fri, 04 Feb 2011 09:45:43 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346As a former substitute, I can empathize. I do know from experience that consistency and follow-through is essential. Continue to great them at the door and make sure that you give deadlines for your assignments (i.e. 20 minutes) and stick to it. In 20 minutes, make sure that you collect the assignment, completed or not. Also, if you are dealing with k-8, contact the parents! If they are high school students, have a system where the students can have access to their grades (i.e. teacherease.com). Set up an account for the students and maintain your grades there (if possible). If students have a visual of their progress, they will usually fall in line. If the school system utilizes another form of grading, then create biweekly progress reports for students. Students have a misconception about progress. Just because they have submitted some assignments, they believe they may be okay. Finally, get administration to back up. If calling the parent (during class - most effective)does not work, then begin the discipline process. You have to set an example that you mean business. If you take my advice, the children will slowly begin to conform. You will have your rebels, but not as many!! GOOD LUCK TO YOU!Fri, 04 Feb 2011 09:24:37 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Substitute teaching is certainly no easy job! Classroom management is the single most challenging issue that most subs have to face. Write your name on the board and try to address each student by their name if you can remember it. Never talk down to students as this just breeds resentment. You want to appear friendly but you are not your student's friend (because they're not on your level). Body language is very important. Try to smile only when students are on task and try not to frown to express disappointment but try to appear rather stoic. Pick a student helper in each class to help you find materials and to help you learn other student's names more quickly. Make a list on the board of students who stay on task and students who are not on task. Try not to take yourself too seriously and remember to have a sense of humor. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 22:05:04 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I like to build rapport with the students. I greet the students at the door. As they walk in, they see my name on the board and a starter activity. Once the bell rings for class to start, I welcome everyone and tell them my name. I tell them a little about me, emphasizing anything that may help build that rapport (ie. I coach flag football and love video games). I tell the students that I'm a parent and a teacher and am excited to be with them. I agree with everyone else when they say that confidence is the key. It gets easier as I substitute more. Management is also going to change based on the age group you are in, so be prepared for anything. Tootsie rolls, M&Ms, etc. go a really long way. Stickers as well. Students love to be praised. Keep moving around the room. I've never sat down behind the teachers desk, even when I was teaching a class of 3 in AP Physics. Be involved and interested. "I like how you're working so hard"..."You have excellent handwriting"..."Wow, I can't believe you've almost completed the assignment! You're really smart" Kids eat that stuff up. You'll end up getting a ton of hugs/high fives on their way out of the class at the end of the day.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 21:59:02 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Ok I decided to post a short blog about it and building up a child by establishing mutual respect. Not to say I've never had an unruly class but I sure have learned from those experiences. Hope this helps, here's the link: http://mysublife.wordpress.com/Thu, 03 Feb 2011 21:26:15 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I make it a priority to introduce myself and take roll and greet them by their name, as I do so, it helps me remember their names, even if it's just for the one period and I'm also respecting them as a person. Like wise I expect their respect and will write my name on the board for them, so I don't answer to "ms uhhhm." Then as they persist in disrupting the class I give a warning, write their names on the board and if they persist I call administration to remove the student(s) from my room. All it takes is one example and the rest of the students fall right in line. I'm not asking them to do anything different than what their teacher would expect, so it's simple for them.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 20:36:08 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I walk into a class with my own discipline plan in hand. First I have little laminated paper called Balloon Bucks. I explain to the students how to get Balloon Bucks, which they offer suggestions. During the day if I see them working on what they are suppose to do, they get a balloon buck. If they aren't they do not. I use them for first time obedience, doing what you are suppose to be doing, completing work etc. At the end of the day the can cash in the balloon bucks for a balloon animal, which I make during the day. They one with the most money gets to select their balloon animal first. OR I tell them for every 5 balloon bucks they earn, I will let them choose a piece of candy that I bring in, not their teacher has in class. Kids usually respond real well and I rarely have a bad day subbing if I use my system properly. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 18:59:45 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I totally agree with everybody that you have to appear confident. One thing I would look at is your body language, e.g. hunched shoulders or similar. Examine what you look like to the students and how they are likely to respond to you. I also make sure that I have a prepared sub pack for the grade level for a variety of subjects. It happens too often that the lesson plan--if there is one--is unclear. That way you can always fall back on your material and still have a productive lesson, even if it's not what the regular teacher is teaching them at that time. For example, you could have a short story that the class can analyze, preferably in groups.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 18:47:44 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Good to see all the great comments. As a special ed (substitute) teacher specialising in behavior management and as a parent of two very well-behaved, now university students, I can't stress enough the importance of making positive statements to those students who are doing the right thing. Nametags are great - use them to acknowledge those students who are on task, not to berate those who are misbehaving. (I can't tell you how many times i've wanted to tell a teacher to stop giving attention to those who are acting up - that's just what they want.) When asking the whole class to be on task, i like to say something like, "it's so great to see most of you working quietly" and give eye contact to those behaving. Often the misbehaving students just want attention - and they've learned that the easiest way to get it is to misbehave. (I've had a totally out of control adhd primary student sit and fold his hands, looking for acknowledgement, after he didn't get any attention for literally climbing the walls.) Names on the board with ticks next to them for every time you 'catch them being good' and a follow-up note to the teacher with positive comments makes you not only a favorite of the students, but also of their regular teacher. And all those kids who normally do the right thing will finally get some attention, too. P.S. - just in case the teacher hasn't left an activity sheet to get started with, have a set on hand to walk in with - even if you have to google it right after you've received the call and know what year level and subject you're dealing with.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 16:16:55 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I so do understand! I've had many good days subbing, but I've also had a some hard days, and even a couple of disastrous days. Keep in mind that some days or some classes will be like that, for various reasons, and it's not always your fault. Additionally, keep in mind that you will develop the right balance of firmness and friendliness through experience, and the students will recognize that in you when they size you up, and will respond accordingly. However, it does take experience, so don't give up now! Be patient with yourself, and evaluate how each day went - what you did well, and what you can work on for next time. Finally, don't be afraid to check in with another teacher or an administrator for specific advice if you've had a rough class. I've seen a lot of good suggestions on here so I'll try to avoid repeating them. An additional idea that I have often used is to start each class with the heading "our note to the teacher" in a corner of the whiteboard, and I tell students that, at the end of class (for hs or ms) or the end of the day, we'll decide together what I'll write on the note for the teacher. Under it I'll list some general expectations, modified for the grade level. Did we learn? Was the material too hard, easy, just right, too little, too much...? Include a general classification for behavior. If the class begins to be disruptive or unfocused, I might ask them if that's what they want on the note to the teacher, or I might write something like, "We had a hard time settling in, but then we worked hard," and the students will usually see that and follow suit. Sometimes for an elementary class that is on edge, I'll break the note down into sections and check with the students at the end of each subject on what we'll write about just that segment of the day. (use +- so you don't run out of room) Waiting until the end to evaluate the day can be too long for some classes, and they appreciate knowing that they can improve upon a bad start and be proud of their efforts. Another thing I tell students who are incessantly disruptive or noisy is that, while they may choose not to do the work, they are being disrespectful to their classmates who ARE trying to work. Many otherwise noisy students will calm down when they realize that their peers may not be happy with them. The hard working students will sometimes take this as a cue to ask the noisy ones to stop. Though a class has occasionally not respond to these ideas, I've had good overall success with them. Good luck and hang in there! Being a sub is not easy, and I've seen well-seasoned, retired teachers sometimes have a rough day subbing, so you're not alone!Thu, 03 Feb 2011 15:28:20 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Today I had music all day. This teacher had left a picture of the class sitting on the floor with their names. That was great. When the students came in and sat down, I called a student's name and told her/him that the word of the day was POLITE. I want them all to be polite to me and each other and I will be polite to them. At the end of the class I read to them what I have written their teacher and ask if I have forgotten anything.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 15:08:16 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Practice hearing them by recording your own voice say what they say then research on possible responses to those. when you hear it all the time it gets to the point when a saying "I don't like you, you are ugly" becomes you are a cute dude who does not care much. As a reminder, we are not in a battle with our "active" students, we are to support them to communicate the way we want them to,silence is better than saying something against them, focus on the good guys when the bad guys are working. Drama in class what makes these kids get so excited! Technology, elevision and the internet are part of their modern world with no limitations. Hope that helps. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 14:27:52 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I doubt you are going to get that "nugget" that will change your classroom management style. First, ask the teachers on either side of your room for help if it gets out of control. This will give you insight into the discipline that the teacher you are subbing for expects. Candidly, some full-time teachers don't care about discipline. Enforce school policies (no cell phones for example) but don't think you are going to change established behaviors in one day. Secondly, determine if the administration will back you up. I get called to MS a lot. I had to cover the last 2 periods of PE in an emergency and the only thing we had was a video on the food pyramid. Needless to say it was a mightmare. I took names, turned them into the administration and left at the end of the day. The next day I was the In School Restriction sub and when period 6 started, the door opened and the Principle came in followed by the 5 students I had written down. They each handed me a hand written letter of apology. If admin is not backing you up, go to another school. Finally, follow what the teacher left. When a student says, "Mr/Mrs. X lets us..." I pull out the guidelines left for me, mention that it says nothing about that, and then quip, "I have been married for 25 years, I know how to follow directions." That little bit of humor often deflects enough of the interest to get back on track. Make sure you are cut out for subbing. Recognize what you can and cannot accomplish in 1 day and go with that. If you can't live with that you might want to reconsider subbing.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 14:20:51 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I have worked in the education field for over 20 years and must say that the most valuable tool in my management bag is relationship building. Establishing even the most surface level of a relationship with your students of the day can go a very long way toward respect and compliance. I always bring a small treat that I use to tangibley demonstrate how much I appreciate the students' cooperation and I make sure that I mention several times during the day that I am enjoying the time with them. I haven't really experienced the "blood in the water" feelings some of you have expressed. I guess that I look at the situation from a different point of view....we're in this together, let's make the best day of it that we can - together. Good luck!Thu, 03 Feb 2011 13:36:47 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I recommend Tools for Teaching by Fred Jones. In a nutshell, what I do for classroom management (HS/MS)is: 1. Greet students at the door-give them the handout if there is one. 2. Introduce yourself and put them to work. 3. Then take role, preferrably with a seating chart-just confirm who is absent. 4. Walk around the room right away and make sure they are working. I always offer to help, especially in math and science. DO NOT PLAN TO SIT AT THE TEACHER's DESK FOR THE DAY. 5. Discipline before instruction! Any goof-offs must be confronted immediately usually by going over and inquiring about their work. Use proximity as a tool. 6. If everyone is working, great! Start learning names when you have time. You will see them again. 7. Be calm and have a sense of humor.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 11:30:47 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I agree with all of the posted comments and feel they all bring up valid points. My advice to you would be to search the name Harry Wong online. He is the most dynamic speaker and teacher I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He has written a book called The First Days of School, which I believe every new teacher should have to read. It is not filled with ideologies, but rather, tools to deal with how a classroom should be run. If you search his name online, there is a free website that has many of his articles published. It is well worth your time to read some of what this man has to say. I have incorporated so many of his strategies in my classroom with great success. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 11:03:58 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I often think about a show I watch...The Dog Whisperer with Ceasar Milan. Go with it for a minute... People, children and pets can all sense when there is a leader they feel they can challenge. You ultimately have to be calm and assertive as he says....feel confident in what you are doing. You will still have some kids who will challenge you know matter what you do. And say things that are disrespectful which most of the time have something to do with issues that they are going through in their personal life and you are just an easy target for them to vent their frustration. I am posting a link to a doctor of psychology who has some great ways to approach these situations and explains how if we fail to get control of this situation, it can and usually will lead to others following this student's lead. I hope this info is helpful, but if not...I would fall back on administration to add a level of reinforcement when dealing with disrespectful students. I hope this link to Dr. Kenneth Shore, psychologist and chair of child study is helpful. http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/shore/shore018.shtmlThu, 03 Feb 2011 10:43:31 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I am a seasoned teacher and find you have an edge when you can "call them by name". So, I buy the name badges with clips and place "my name is" cards inside. I write their first hame on the outside (of badge- not card) and have those on their desk. If you attach on left side, on the collar of the T, you can see it and it does not get in the way. Nail polish remover allows you to erase the permanent marker. Students need to be reminded not to embellish the "My name is" because you can reuse. In schools with Block 1 and Block 2, I have a set in red and a set in blue. This has been a godsend for me! Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:41:07 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Everyone has offered some great advice so far. Let me just say that it is great and extremely helpful if the classroom teacher has a classroom management plan already. If they do, try and locate that ahead of time so that you may become familiar with it. I do realize that that is not always the case. You have to set the tone from the first second you walk into the room. First impressions are very important. People have always told me to be firm and fair. Best wishes to you. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:32:41 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I hate to wave the surrender flag, but sometimes it's the wisest thing to do. By that, I don't mean walk out of the class in a huff and announce you're never coming back. No, just pick your schools carefully, at least if you're in a district big enough to have many options. There are some schools in my district that I just steer clear of, to avoid difficult days. Sometimes, there just aren't any techniques that squelch bad behavior. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:22:20 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346you know you have to be strong in yourself first. The students will follow you if your sincere and interesting. Do not be timid. Do not waiver. Do not play games. Do not show fear. But know that you are a teacher and your job is to teach. Forever as far back as the classroom has been in existence and the student body been in it..there have always been behavior. Teachers if you study there past proven methods of successfully moving the class in a direction of learning is because that teacher was stronger than there behavior. There vitality and presence was something that gave the student enthusiasm to learn. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:16:40 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346First let me say that I let intimidation rule me the whole first year I was "qualified" to sub. I refused to even sub at the highschool and middle school level because I thought they would just overwhelm me. I got some good advice from seasoned subs, that you just have to "suck it up and get in there and do it." And they also knew me personally so that was part of it. So for advice for you, yes, body language is a lot of it. I am a bit "unconventional" when it comes to the specific guidelines. I do dress appropriately, but due to a swollen leg problem, I started wearing tennis shoes with my dress clothes. I found that when I wore my red converse sneakers, I had an automatic repore with the students somehow. Like an automatic connection with them that I was someone they should listen to rather than another "boring sub that is going to give them busy work". I don't stand outside the door the whole time, as when the kids get inside the classroom, they will start to gather and chit chat. This really depends on the age of the kids and the group of kids you have. (and their social interactions). It may be better for you to greet them at a table inside the classroom and help direct them to stay on task. If they start groaning that they "don't know what it is"....let them know you will be "TEACHING THEM THE INFORMATION AFTER ROLL CALL". Believe it or not, I've had more students in the last two years tell me they are so glad I have taken the time to actually "teach" them the material rather than sit there on my cell phone, or reading my book or yelling at them for not doing their work than I could believe. I LOVE TEACHING THEM. I WANT to help them succeed. If they see you actually want to help them first, and aren't all about "rules" first. That will help also. Another rather "uncoventional" thing I tend to do with my Juniors and Seniors - is talk to them like their age. "Good Morning. I'm Mrs. Meaking, you sub for the next couple of days. Now, I know I've had some of you in classes before, and I'm glad to see you again. I absolutely love teaching the High Schoolers! (which i sincerely do. Maybe insert a "juniors rule, or Seniors rule..whichever you have that period) Now, let me just get one thing settled with ya'll real quick, and we will get to work. I didn't just start teaching yesterday, and ya'll didn't just start having subs today. You are close to graduating and I KNOW you all know how to behave. I do leave notes for my teachers (and I may ask my former students to confirm this, usually it's in regards to positive notes) and I really like it when I have something positive to say about each class period. It would break my heart to have to say anything negative about any of my favorite kids, and I'm SURE your teacher wouldn't want to come back and read anything negative about any of you. So, ALRIGHT! I'm going to take roll, and I like to see who's name I'm tearing up, but if you help me correct it, then that means I should say it better the next time I get to say it! (with a big smile)." The kids actually seem to respond well to this, and they do give me a chance to make eye contact when I take roll...this also gives me more control by knowing their names (and usually the "trouble makers" will have already cut up by then so you will have some idea of what their names are) Now, if your whole class is getting off task while you are teaching or even while you are just helping a few kids while walking around the room, Just stop and get their attention. "Ok, guys and gals....excuse me. Remember. My end of class notes that I write? I don't want to go and already put down things. Let's stay on track as a group." Or if one student is a problem over and over, you have to just keep your cool and go over to them and get on their level. Many times I have seen that they just aren't "getting" the idea of their work, or even more so - it's the student they have sat themselves next to that is creating the problem for them. So i ask them to move nicely and usually it's not a problem. Believe it or not, Cesar Milan from the Dog Whisper teaches dog owners to be "Calm and Assertive". Seriously, this is a skill you can always carry over to working with students. Even unruly, horomone ridden middle schoolers.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:14:30 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346In addition to what has been said about confidence (and it's important to BE calm and confident, not just fake it) use the smart slate if the classroom has one. Being able to walk around the room while writing on the board is a great help, since proximity to the teacher solves a lot of disruptive behavior.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:10:26 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346First of all, you need to remain confident, no matter how disrespectful the students are. Remember you are in charge of the climate in the classroom and can demand respect just by standing tall and looking each of them in the eye. I always wait for silence to occur, then start speaking to them about the lesson. Walking over to a student that is acting up, usually gives them the idea that I am serious. If any student still speaks out to disrupt the class, I write up a detention. If the student still persists, I either send him/her to the principal's office or call the office for help. You are not alone, backup procedures are in place. Hope some of my experience helps you, I have been subbing for 15 years now and I love my job. There are a few isolated times when I've called for help, removed a student from my class, and continued on with the lesson without any further problems. Try to stay in the moment and remain calm!Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:07:28 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346Boy have I been there! In my experience, the basis of classroom management is an uncanny blend of trust and strength. You can set the tone of your expectations immediately once you've gotten the bulk of their attention. Please remember you won't have everyone - half are out of whack b/c their regular teacher is absent; half are deliberately capitalizing on this 'cause you are a sub. In high or middle school I always say "I am your guest teacher' My name is ----. Tell me about your school." (5 mins). YOu can even write the condensed comments on the board briefly. Then you can stand back and look at the list and make plus (+) or minus (-) signs by each. This shows not only that you believe them, but that you CARE (and maybe agree with some of the sadder comments). Then I remind them that college is not like this at all; it will be more adult - this puffs them up and makes me their ally (for a day). Next, if college is their aspiration (supposedly), I say "here's what we're scheduled to do today: I remind them that they are accountable for their time today" (not me- Ive already been through HS). Of course if the assignment is lame, and it often is, I use it as a departure point; allow them to work in groups and report out (like college). Before I know it the class is over and they go racing out (to their next victim)and saying how cool I was. I hope you'll consider my experience as a resource and best of luck going forward.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:07:19 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346When thinking about classroom management while substituting in a classroom I first go to the sub folder and/or behavior charts in the classroom. I know that, unfortunately, sometimes these things aren't present; this is when I pull out my trusty chimes, name tags, and make up a seating chart (if one is not available) and institute behavior management procedures for the day. We go over how we would transition from lesson to lesson; bathroom procedures and getting ready to leave the room. I allow a lot of time for transitions and give several warnings that a shift is about to take place. I use chimes/music to signal transitions. Lay out expectations the first 5 minutes of the day so that you are not explaining your expectations all day long. I would also leave a note for the teacher about the day in his/her mailbox. Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:01:21 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I learned very quickly - "do not let them see you sweat". They are like wild animals - like you said they can smell the blood. Show confidence from the get go. Identify, but don't call them out, the potential problems before they enter the classroom. They will generally be students at the back of the line or last into the classroom. Get to know them by name fast and always keep in proximity to the behavioral instigators.Thu, 03 Feb 2011 10:00:58 GMTClassroom Management Issues continuedhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=346I would love to have a seasoned mentor on this subject. The college classes and even the online course are very enlightening in theory, but the psychology of successfully managing a class as a sub is quite daunting to me. There must be effective phrases, reinforcements - positive and negative, and ways to "get em where they live" to make them understand proper behavior in the classroom. I need to learn these and practice them diligently. I am so torn about , lying somewhere between discipline junkie and being structured, engaging, and caring. I have had experiences where the very first look students see in my eyes is enough to size me up. They smell blood in the water, so to speak, and try to get away with almost anything. They're kids, yes, but the psychology of their acting out is a frustrating mystery to me. I know that greeting students at the door and giving them seat work or starter work begins instruction right away, hopefully diminishing the chances of off task behavior. However, I sense in many Schools and classrooms this attitude of entitlement in students that leads them to feel they have the right to do what they want, to disrespect teachers, and that school is more of a bother to them than anything. I've said enough. Lil help? Anyone?Wed, 02 Feb 2011 16:53:59 GMTAssessment Scoringhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=344The computer will always use the highest score. A school's ranking need not have anything to do with the value of an individual department or course. We all know of schools that have some kind of high ranking but have individual departments that do *not* have high rankings (in terms of reputation. Do you credit the U.S.News/World Report rankings? Do you really think they discriminate in a narrow way between schools? Now, *that* might be examined as a "money pit!") For my own experience in taking this course (though I haven't yet used it) I approach my days in the classroom with much greater confidence, armed with knowledge, awareness, and tools. A great strength that substitute teachers have is that they come from different backgrounds. Just a few hints about the SubAssessment while you are taking it. The classroom management portion is hardest and weighed most heavily. That score is the most important and requires roughly a 15/18 in that section.

Teaching strategies is the next hardest section. Usually it's the questioning strategy that people have the hardest time with. So I would encourage you to study that section extra carefully.

If you are just starting out, the Professionalism section only has ten questions and easier than the other sections so you may want to review that section first.

I hope these hints help! Good luck!!

The course is wonderful & the Handbook is a great tool, but the questions are written in such a way that as students we're stressing over trying to interpret what's in someone else's mind (those who wrote the questions) rather than applying what we've learned. I go into the test with what I feel is a good grasp of the material, but many of the test questions are so vague it ends up being more of a process-of-elimination exercise.Thu, 06 Jan 2011 17:27:33 GMTTook the Wrong SubAssessmenthttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=315In an attempt to take my second subassessment test covering Teaching Strategies, I somehow got into the STEDI Strengths Pre-Screening Tool instead. I was so nervous, especially when I saw so much material that was unfamiliar (because I hadn't gotten that far in the study), I did the best I could to get through & get out. I've since taken the correct subassessment, but now I need to know how to get the Pre-Screening one taken off my records -- apparently you only have one chance to take it, & I used that one in error! Help.....Thu, 06 Jan 2011 17:15:16 GMTCommon Sense Information Taught - Complicated Answers on Assessment.http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=287I am going to call tomorrow for my personal information, but for the information of others I would like to further go into the original post. Many of the questions use information from the material, but are then asked in a way that requires you to think critically about the material. For instance the book tells you that "for the most part questioning students about inappropriate behavior is useless... There are 3 reasons for not questioning students about their behavior. 1- you don't really want to know--you just want to change the behavior 2- it leads to more pointless questions and wastes the time of the class 3- it only gives them the attention they wanted in the first place and may cause them to do it again okay. I can remember that. However, what they ask you is something like What would be the ONLY reason to question a student about inappropriate behavior? So, by reading the material we can not reach an exact conclusion. We can only use logic, previous knowledge from another classroom management course, and.or perhaps our own experiences with children Unfortunately if you are not used to this style of classroom management or SHOCK are a new teacher and have never gone in-depth into classroom management, and/OR worse you've been taught to manage the classroom using coercion (seriously) ---it can be hard to come up with the correct answer. The worst part is that all of the sections are the same way. For instance, the fill-in activity portion asks so many questions in this way and it's such a new concept to me that I did the worst on it. It is the shortest section and it should be very cut and dry... yet.. it isn't! That said, I will pass this test. It won't have the grades that I feel reflect my personal abilities as a teacher, but it will be passing.Wed, 05 Jan 2011 22:53:14 GMTCommon Sense Information Taught - Complicated Answers on Assessment.http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=287I am having a huge problem with classroom management i have taken it two times i dont no what i have wrong what can i do i have never felt like this Wed, 05 Jan 2011 22:09:25 GMTThere should be a national minimum wage for subshttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=293YPUR SO RIGHT. 1st time subbing for a teacherhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=308Hello Melissa,

This is a great question, a lot of people get nervous teaching in high school settings. The first thing I would say is to be really positive. Students will respond best to teachers they like. Be real and enjoy the students and continually praise them for appropriate behavior. You will also want to walk around the classroom and be near the students. Your proximity will help you keep students on task without having to say anything.

Here are some articles if you'd like to read more about classroom management:

Here are some ideas for fill-in activities:

I hope this his helpful for you! I know teaching high school can be nerve-racking, but I came to absolutely love it! Good luck and let me know how it goes!

1st time subbing for a teacherhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=308Hello, I have been substituting for teacher aids since Jan 10.I have been a teachers assistant during a summer program(for 2nd graders)where I filled in for the teacher. I am almost finished with my associates in Elementary Ed. I work in all the schools from elementary to high school. Here is the problem. Now that I am on the sub list for the teachers and have been asked to sub. I am starting to freak myself out and am really nervous that I will mess up. I have read the book and I will be working in the high school instead of my major comfort zone. QUESTION: Do you have suggestions for working with the high school students? Filler activities etc? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!Mon, 03 Jan 2011 22:11:18 GMTCommon Sense Information Taught - Complicated Answers on Assessment.http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=287I probably should have edited that post. Pardon my poor sentence structure.Thu, 30 Dec 2010 13:39:11 GMTCommon Sense Information Taught - Complicated Answers on Assessment.http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=287Hi, I am having this problem right now. I have been trying so hard to get through this first portion of the test and every time I take it, I either stay the same or get worse! There are many questions that are direct and straight forward, however since there are only 18 answers possible, the few that are totally out of nowhere can take you down a large percentage. There are questions that DO NOT have answers in the book. Furthermore even if they were in the book, every time you take it a new set of questions is asked. You can't figure out what you got wrong this way, therefore you can not find the correct response. The first time I took it I had no idea what I got wrong but I thought it might be the questions that I was unsure about. I reviewed what was suggested and found one new answer. So then I went to take it and the question I found the answer to was not even on the test and there were new questions that I apparently got wrong so I had to go back and re-study it again. Some questions I could not find the answers to. It was impossible. The third time I decided to take my time with my answers and use the sub-teacher handbook as a reference. I did worse!! So at this point I'm giving up and moving on becuase my first score was 88. Personally I am not satisfied with that. Though I have anxiety I am normally capable of doing very well with testing. I also want to have high scores for my resume. I'm very disappointed and frustrated that this might not be possible.Thu, 30 Dec 2010 13:37:17 GMTTest Timerhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=305I just wanted to let people know that having the clock right above the question is a little intense for people with test anxiety. The wording of the questions is terrible and goes against the way a teacher is taught to create test questions for their school. If I wasn't enrolled in education glasses I would not have the score I have. The management part is stopping me from getting a passing score. I think the questions should be straight forward or they school district should lower the passing score. I heard several people complain about the test questions. I also heard my district is low on subs this year because of the test. I think the company should be aware of the questions on the test.Mon, 16 Aug 2010 00:12:45 GMTCommon Sense Information Taught - Complicated Answers on Assessment.http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=287I too am stressed over the section on classroom management. The other sections had strange double negative answers and no way to know which answers I missed, but I did pass them. I will still have to retake the classroom management section and pass it. I hope I can! Otherwise I guess I will have to sub in a neighboring district where they don't require this test to be able to work.Sat, 17 Jul 2010 16:19:11 GMTBeware Assessments - Logic Based NOT Straightforwardhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=285I agree with the folks that the first section has too many correct answers for the same question and you cannot know which answer is the MORE correct one. I too have subbed a long time, over 10 years, and this test is not a good tool to assess whether or not we understand what we just learned. Subs who work in large inner city public schools should earn no less than $15 an hour for the major challenges we face daily in these school districts. Subs will be required to perform better because school districts need to pass AYP goals. Subs should make more than the high school students that we teach. Gov. Bob Riley stated in his 2007 State of the State Address that, "Each year, Alabama adds approximately 4,000 new teachers. Yet, 50 percent of them will leave teaching by their fifth year." Who will cover these classes when these 4,000 new teachers leave, quit or get fired? Substitute teachers, of course. Subs in the 4th largest inner city public schools in Alabama, the Birmingham City Schools, earn $60 a day or $7.50 an hour. One of the teachers I subbed for at my sons' school made a complaint about me. I was only there a half day afternoon. I arrived and reported to her classroom. She finished her lecture then explained to me that her student teacher would be in charge. (The student teacher had finished her hours but had a few to make up and came back to fill in that day.) I sat down at the teacher's desk. She explained everything I needed to know (which wasn't much since the student teacher would be conducting class), took attendance for that class and left. I said very little to the teacher. She reported to the school secretary that I said something to the extent that she was a bitch to her students. I sure don't remember saying that or anything close to it or even feeling that way. And if I was the teacher and had a sub say this to me or when I was within earshot I would have immediately gone to the office and reported it and asked for that sub to be removed from my classroom. This has been bothering me all day today since the woman at Kelly called me. This assignment was December 16, over 12 days ago. We had school the rest of that week and two days last week. In other words, why did it take almost two weeks to be reported? And why did the secretary at the school tell Kelly Services that they have had problems with this teacher and not to worry about it? The secretary has known me for over two years because my kids have attended school there and I have substitute taught there many times. I explained to the woman at Kelly Services that my kids attend school there and would never jeopardize a relationship with a teacher. All Kelly Services did was block me from subbing in that teacher's classroom not from the building based on the comments made by the secretary, I guess. However, this is really bugging me that I did not say anything close to the comments I am being accused of. Have you been accused of something that did not happen? If so, how did you handle it? Or is there anything I can do about it?Mon, 28 Dec 2009 21:07:43 GMTIs anyone else having difficulty getting to the assessments?http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=259I also cannot take the test. They also acknowledged that my guide was missing the ENTIRE sub orientation section. However I am still disconnecting when I finish my test so I don't get to see my wrong questions. However I just got an 85% so I guess it doesn't matter. Those questions are so much easier to answer when the answers are actually in the guide. Fri, 06 Nov 2009 18:05:47 GMTYour site has disconnected me 3+ times and some questions asked at not in the guide.http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=249I have been cut off early. Ive hit "Accept" on an answer and it just sits there saying "connecting" and never connects. This is very unprofessional. I have lost 3+ attempts. I am sitting at an 84% and need an 85%. Also there are questions asked in the tests that do not appear in the online guide. This is a bit ludicrous if you ask me. For example. There are questions asking me what I do if a student is injured. Ranging from staying with the student, going to the office, sending the student to the office, and attempting to help the student myself. Yet none of these situations appear anywhere within the guide. Another question involving parental permission slips asking me wether I let the kid call his parent for permission, send them to the libary, send them to the office, or let them go to the office to see if they can get permission. Again NOTHING about permission slips of any kind is mentioned in your guide. Again this is overly frustrating. To be sitting at an 84% with a 16/18 in Classroom Management and a 13/15 in Teaching strategies and watch my chances of being able to apply dwindle because the answers to questions are not provided in the study guide and I am constantly disconnected and losing attempts...is infuriating to say the least. However, during the last three times taking this category, there were some questions that didn't have the answer from Sub. Online Course, and I had no clue to answer them. Are these answers in the Substitute Teacher Handbook? The first time I completed all the sections I got a composite score of 51%. In order to have my scores reset, I had to take this 3 hours substitute course. It was not helpful at all. I even had to pay $ 28 for the book. The questions to the test were poorly written and there could be multiple answers depending on what type of perspective you are looking at it from. After I took all 5 sections again, I got a composite score of 84% and I needed an 85% to pass. I have no more chances and now I have to pay $20 to reset my chances for 1 percent. Now, I am not a mathmetician but when I figured out the composite score it was an 88% not an 84%as it states. Does anyone know how they figure out the composite score? and is it possible for my chances for one of the sections be resetfor free since I am supposedly 1% away from passing. Too many of the questions are awkward and difficult to understand just what is being asked. Some of them do not make any sense at all. Yesterday, I was called in to substitute a 2nd grade classroom. I arrived 15min. before class started and found there were no lesson plans. The teacher that called me in to substitute teach quickly wrote down a list of lessons to review with the students. Then, when the students arrived, the teacher stayed with me until the end of morning exercises. After she left, I had no control over the classroom. I tried using the verbal cues and signs the teacher taught me to quiet the students but nothing worked. The noise level grew out of control and another teacher had to quiet the students. When it was time to go to the bathroom, music, lunch and etc., I had no idea where to go. I couldn't even get the boys and girls to form a straight line to quietly walk down the hall. Now, after that experience, I realize I should have been more prepared. I am creating my own substitute teaching kit complete with lesson plans, disciplinary forms and hall passes. I also realize I need to work on my voice level because I am soft-spoken. I probably will not receive another opportunity to substitute teach in the same school but I hope to be better prepared for the next school. I took the first sub pretest. I picked my ego off the floor and studied the book, read it through, blah, boring. Took the pretest again, got high score in the 90's. Was confident now. Took the real test. Got horrible low score in the 70's again (noticed the questions were different than the pretest). Picked my ego up off the floor and went through the book with a yellow highlighter and made notes with a pen in the margins. Took the first section of the test again. Score not good enough for me. Decided to retake each section (Fill-in, Teaching Methods, etc.) separately until I was out of 4 chances. I only had to do this with one section. I then studied each of the other sections intensely before taking that sections test. I took my time. I had to re-log in repeatedly after studying. By this time the manual made perfectly good sense to me and I was quite fond of it. I also noticed I could take my time and carefully read through the sometimes trickily-worded questions ("what is not a good way to use non-coercive methods..."), while at the same time referring to the yellow-highlighted glossary in which I had noted the page numbers of more detailed information in the main chapters. You can do it if you want it enough. I had to set aside a weekend for it. I also got burned out a bit (too much information overload), and had to often get out of the room and do other things for a few minutes. Sometimes I was springing in and out of the room like a yo-yo. But I had a goal to achieve it within the weekend and I kept at it until I did. This is what worked for me. Good luck. Chris Schofield Director of IT STEDI, LLCTue, 16 Dec 2008 10:02:05 GMTSTEDI Web Site Updates...http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=187As you may have already noticed, we at STEDI have been making improvements to the STEDI web site. We've tried to make the site easier to navigate, a little more organized (with a lot more organizing to do!) and even added some new features, like the Substitute Teacher Blog. Hopefully, these changes will make it easier for you, as substitute teachers, to easily find information and resource to improve your substitute teacher skills. As new features and updates are added to the web site, I'll highlight them here and in the substitute teacher blog. Some new features and updates that you can expect to see in the near future are: - Photo highlights of REAL substitute teachers and their success stories right on our web site. - A new chat system that will rival the current buggy and less usable chat feature. Yeah, I know it needs work! :) - A searchable online database of the best fill-in-activities and other resources to aid you in your substitute teacher experience. - For those who use Feedburner or other RSS feed services: RSS feeds to the forums so you can receive updates automatically. ALSO, be sure to visit and subscribe to the Substitute Teacher Blog! Finally, I'll also announce that we'll be creating online versions of ALL of our training materials and delivering them in ONE PLACE through a NEW ONLINE TRAINING TOOL! This will enhance our current online versions by providing a one-stop training system where you can get access to all of the training materials you've purchased and even track your progress through the training. The SubStrength Finder and SubAssessment tools will also be delivered through this new system! Expect to see this great tool around February or March 2009! Please reply to this discussion with your comments and suggestions about any other changes you'd like to see on the STEDI web site! Always be prepared for the time when the lesson plan does not fill the entire period. Use your skills and expertise to prepare fill-in activities that are part of the subject of the class. The purpose of fill-in activities is not to merely keep students busy, but to actually teach them something. This usually supplements what the students are learning that day, though new material may be used as well. In my field of history, I draw upon a wide variety of scholarly books and journal articles as well as documents, and prepare fill-in activities from those. My fill-in activities are just like regular lesson plans. I will even leave a note for a teacher that cites some of the books and articles that I have used in my own research. This only works in a class that is your subject area. Kevin R. Fish San Jose, California Sun, 05 Oct 2008 15:06:05 GMTtest is very very tricky and difficult. MacSun, 28 Sep 2008 10:41:57 GMTLooking for Substitute Teachers with Professional Backgroundshttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=162Hello everyone, my name is JD. I work for a online English Tutoring site called www.teacherjames.com and we're doing something a little different in the online English Tutoring space. While Teacherjames.com does most of the typical private online E-Learning tutoring, I'm working on launching a new division called "Teacherjames Professionals". Basically, our belief is that if you are a substitute teacher, then you have the best combination of Teaching Skills and also most likely some other education background or training (like nursing, engineering, law, etc). Substitute teachers are wide and varied in where they come from and where they want to go. With Teacherjames.com Professionals, you can make some good part-time money and also meet associates and people from China and Taiwan. Here's the idea: 1. You're a substitute teacher with a Professional background (say nursing). 2. We work with you to create a series of 15-20 Pre-Recorded Courses on Nursing which are streamed to our students online 24/7. The topic for your course could be: "Simple English for Nurses and Hospital Staff" This course covers simple vocabulary that Asian hospitals and clinics need to teach their hospital staff. Everything is pre-recorded but you assign homework. The student or staff member has the option to do this homework, but they CAN get feedback from you on your course (different from CDs and DVDs). We (Teacherjames Professionals) will market your recorded course and target Asian hospitals and clinics to buy it. Then we split the profits. Once you record this course once, then you don't ever have to do it again. THIS IS STAGE ONE...which we say is Passive Income. STAGE TWO: Say a hospital or a clinic watches your course and wants to hire you as their weekly teacher for helping their hospital staff. You can imagine how in demand your Nursing English skills might be to people in China (most of the "English Teachers" overseas or abroad don't happen to have a background in Nursing). Now, you can teach this clinic online using the regular Teacherjames.com online tutoring interfaces. We would set up the equipment for the clinic and all you need is a computer, internet connection, and webcam. Now, you are making residual money (from your recordings) and part time money (sometimes up to $30US-$50US an hour for very specialized English) and then you are meeting some new associates from around the world. If you have a background in something like International Finance or Law, then this might be even better for you. Our idea is to find good teachers (subs) with Professional Backgrounds to match them with Asian companies in their field. We start with these recordings that we can show companies what the teacher is like, what a course would be like, and then the teacher can also make money off the recordings. Then, our staff in Asia (based in Taipei and offices in Bejing) will match up teachers and companies. This is a pretty new idea in this eLearning / Corporate space, and I'm really excited about it. Check out our website to see that we're not a "fly by night" company (www.teacherjames.com) and if you are interested in learning more, please email me: info@teacherjames.com I can show you other teachers who have participated in this program in topics like "Business English for Travelers" "Banking Vocabulary and Practices", etc. Also, we are looking to partner with some substitute teacher organizations or associations to get our message out. We think this is a really good opportunity that some subs (not all) but some subs would really like. Thanks in advance!Sun, 14 Sep 2008 12:00:45 GMT??http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=161How do you know if you passed? Theresa Rodriguez said her daughter, Katie, did not want to return to class Monday because she said a man taped her mouth Friday for being disruptive in class and warned her that he might tie her up. "I want this man to be punished for what he did," Rodriguez said Tuesday. Tustin Unified School District officials fired the unidentified teacher Monday. The matter is being investigated by police, said police Lt. Michael Shanahan. District officials, who withheld the teacher's name, notified the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, which will decide whether to revoke, suspend or take other action on his license after conducting an investigation. "We take these matters very seriously, and we will not tolerate that type of behavior," said district spokesman Mark Eliot. "We want to make sure this person will not be returning to Tustin." The teacher had worked in the district since January with no complaints. Teachers can continue working while an investigation is ongoing. The commission can revoke a certificate immediately only if a teacher is charged with a sex crime or drug offenses involving minors. The district was in such need of subs, if a warm body showed up, they were grateful. At the same time, when I worked in accounting at a hospital, there wasn't much feedback either unless there was a problem. So since I have retired from the hospital, I will be starting to sub again. I think of myself as self-employed and do my own evaluation. A university instructor I once had gave me the best advice to help myself improve. After each day of subbing, do a three column sheet, labeling one column "Things that went well" and the second, "Things that could have gone better", and the last, "Things I can do to make them better." This has been so valuable to more or less do my own feedback. The STI book is loaded with good ideas for making things better. Good luck to you.Tue, 13 Nov 2007 07:37:32 GMTSTI's SubStrength smells like a rackethttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=40Coming from a former teacher who knows all of the catch phrases and the laws surrounding the classroom, this is foolish. I also found some in the SubStrength Finder pretest. I don't claim to be a grammar whiz, but some of these errors were very basic and, on the pretest, annoying. I find this unacceptable and somewhat careless. But on a positive note, I found that, although I already "knew" some of what the lessons were teaching (e.g. importance of positive feedback and promoting higher level thinking), it was interesting to see a bit of the scholarship behind those ideas, such as Bloom's taxonomy. Supposing this sort of scholarship is commonly known among professional teachers, I feel it is an advantage to be familiar with the industry's vocabulary (even if only somewhat).Sat, 20 Oct 2007 11:46:12 GMTTotal Substitutes in the United States?http://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=106Does anyone know how many subs there are in the United States?Sun, 07 Oct 2007 11:34:55 GMTSTI's SubStrength smells like a rackethttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=40I have to find work if I am not to live under a bridge. I have a decent education in the arts and mathematics. However, I am of an age which precludes long term contracts such as those required by Transitions to Teaching programs. Full time substitute teaching is a viable option for an older person. The Philadelphia School District requires the STI diploma for those with no formal preparation or experience, and they give a link to this site. You have to trust somebody! At worst you loose $50! If I wanted to be cynical I might agree with some of these negative assessments. But it is the only way for one to get the needed credentials here. The STI program costs one hell of lot less than the all the ETS Praxis exams in addition to a long term contract and years night school. (Talk about rackets - over $300 for tests alone in addition to a $150 graphing calculator AND all the ETS exam preparation books.) Substitute Teaching may pay less, but there is time and freedom. And maybe, just maybe I might have a positive effect on some child. On balance, then, it would seem that STI program is positive. I certainly wish it had been around the first time I substituted. Who cares which one is the BEST to keep a written record of? Or if I greet the students at the door, should I direct them to the textbook or the black board? Well, that just depends on what the teacher left for students to do. This test was designed to make people buy their material so subs would know how to answer the questions. Many of these questions have little to do with a substitutes effectiveness and the correct answer will only be correct for this test. Besides each school should be able to provide their subs with appropriate material to answer the important questions, like school policy and legal matters. Then, if an ISD wants me to sit at the desk or smile at the students when they come into the classroom, they can tell me. Alas, I guess there's no way to get around this. Classroom Managementhttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=45Prior to taking the 'Classroom Management' test, the website showed me as having already taken it once (with no score). Also, in the SubEvaluation area, it shows that I took the test on 4/13/07 (took it on 2/26/07) and there was a difference between the scores of about 20 points.

I'm (potentially)coming back to teaching after many years in the computer industry. Computer certification's are a 'test scam' INDUSTRY (particularly Microsoft). By comparison, STI is a great deal...

Go ahead and tell me that my attitude determines the outcome, but I have worked with high school kids for 8 years in three different educational capacities (one as a professional swim coach, two different jobs as a sub). The district I worked for used the STI book (provided free of charge) as a supportive reference rather than having the exam as a prerequisite for employment.

If Utah State and this puppet certification exam really want to accredit subs, they should formalize a 'suggested use' section for districts so every district is informed of its intent.

Maybe I'll write that up, and then sell USU a $25 manual on how it should best be done.

STI's SubStrength smells like a rackethttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=40
My reaction to this whole process is decidedly negative. I believe in the value of quality teacher training and certification - for full-time teachers. But the reality is that I'm not a certified, full-time teacher and I don't want to be one. I'm a sub. I'm JUST a sub. I provide little value added to the education process. I'm a warm body in the front of a class to keep kids from going berserk an hour at a time. I know it, the kids know it, and the administration knows it. That doesn't mean my job isn't important or admirable or that I am unprofessional or careless. But I know that as soon as kids leave the room, they forget me, and I'm OK with that.

Some days I find techniques that work, some days I don't. I believe it has to do with establishing a presence that conveys confident, approachable authority and command of the subject. You introduce yourself and talk for a minute about who you are and why you're there. Then you follow that up with a solid presentation of the lesson. You ask some questions and send the kids off to the next class. It doesn't have to be so involved. But maybe I get by gut what some people need to label: K-W-L, brainstorming, blah blah blah. You fill up 45-60 minutes, partly with content, partly with empathy. That's not hard.

STI's SubStrength smells like a rackethttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=40Here's a profitable business idea:
1. set up a website offering a sub certification exam
2. make the test inaccessible to non-certified individuals or anyone who hasn't purchased support materials
3. sell collateral support books, CD's, DVD's and other materials that provide answers to the exam at $20 each
4. the assessment test provides an appearance of credibility
5. make a boatload of money

If you have to point to it ten times in a day, they don't get to do their fun activity etc.
Also any student who 'shows up on the radar' more than twice in an hour, gets a question from me and a probable blue slip, ie.trip to the office. Also, as an interim, put their desk in a corner against the wall for ten minutes and read their book, but that is totally optional.

Management trickshttp://stedi.org/subs/subforum/genDisplayMsg.aspx?MessageNum=23I am a new substitute in a large, urban east coast district.
The post concerns a non-verbal management trick I developed after my first day subbing. The tactic involves a set of laminated signs in large black lettering visible to the entire class. The signs read:

1 Please quickly and quietly take your seats.
2 Please be seated and direct your attention to me.
3 You have 5 seconds to be seated before I call the office...
8 I will now call the office for staff to come and restore order.
9. Thank you for being seated and attentive.

I have only used the signs once. The situation in which I make use of the signs must be one in which a. Many different students are enaged in consequential of-task behavior (the vast majority in the class). b. Several other less heavy-handed strategies have been attempted. c. The learning environment faces immediate threat of disintegration or there is an emerging physical risk to students. Finally, I will not use these signs with students below grade 5.

I would love to hear people's thoughts about these tactics. Are they good, bad indifferent? Or can I modify them to be more effective? Am I using a coercive method and not realizing it? Thanks.

Then again, I do understand because some teachers are not good at what they do, and shouldn't be in the classroom anyway.

Just because you earned a degree doesn't mean you can teach.

I took the strength finder test before I recieved my review book/materials, and scored a little lower than I thought I would. While I've been rather successfull in the classroom, there's always tips and tricks one can review/use to better their performance.

I'm still upset with the no child left behind act, as that took many jobs from many people - many of whom did not have certification in the subject they were teaching, but mastered it over the years and their students met AYP in the said subject - that should have some weight in the decision to let you teach your preferred subject.
