Training improves substitute teacher's teaching skills and confidence levels, enabling them to competently
employ the skills they are armed with. Each district
has its own level of required training for substitute teachers. Some disseminate information on district
policies only, while others provide extensive training including teaching strategies and specific skill
development. Substitute teachers, districts, and ultimately students, all benefit when the district
goes the extra mile to ensure that substitute teachers are proficient in employing teaching strategies and
classroom management techniques prior to taking charge of a classroom. The substitute has a positive teaching
experience, students have a day of quality instruction, the district sees an increase in retention within the
substitute pool, and fewer complaints are lodged against substitute teachers.
STI has divided substitute teacher training into six critical areas of skills instruction that are mirrored
in the
Substitute Teaching Handbooks,
SubInstructor eTraining, and
SubTrainer Manual. These are also
areas in which substitutes are pre-screened in the
SubStrength Finder, assessed in the
SubAssessment, and
monitored using the
SubEvaluation. The six skills areas are:
- Classroom Management
- Teaching Strategies
- The Professional Substitute Teacher
- Legal/Educational Issues
- Special Education
- Fill-In Activties
