STEDI Philosophy
“The key to attracting qualified substitute teachers is not to
lower the
requirements or increase the pay; the key is training.”
The United States Needs Trained, Qualified Substitute Teachers
- One full year of a student’s K-12 education is taught by substitute teachers.
- 86% of school districts can’t find quality substitute teachers.
- 90% of districts nationwide spend less than four hours training substitute teachers.
- Over $2 billion is spent annually on substitute teacher pay.
- 77% of teachers miss school to attend professional development classes.
Addressing These Problems
The Substitute Teaching Institute at Utah State University (STI/USU) is the national leader in training substitute
teachers with the skills they need to be successful in the classroom. By providing recruitment and retention information,
as well as training materials and services, for school districts and substitute teachers around the country, STI/USU works
to revolutionize the role of substitute teachers into opportunities for educational excellence.
Now, the Substitute Teaching Division of STEDI, LLC has been licensed by Utah State University to see to it that every substitute
teacher in the country has a substitute teacher handbook and has been trained in how to use it in being successful in the classroom.
The combination of these two organizations will "revolutionize" substitute teaching in districts that provide training to
their substitute teachers and implement best practices in the management of substitute teaching and teacher absenteeism.
No other organization in the country is as dedicated to improving and innovating educational tools for substitute teaching.
"Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire," says William Butler Yeats.
If this is true, then substitute teachers have the opportunity to light fires every day as they teach from classroom to classroom.
STEDI and STI/USU will provide the tools to light these fires!
